19th century American gynecologist James Marion Sims, famous for perfecting his procedures on enslaved African women, encounters his biracial transgender great-great-great grandchild in a collapsed and imagined dream space. Drawing from both real and imagined family stories, HAUNTS retraces a contradictory history of violence and ironic inheritance through an incantation of dreams and embodied recollection. Using the bodies on stage as a point of converging histories, HAUNTS is an anxious meditation on the urgency of memory.

HAUNTS is a set of musical puzzles, navigated live on stage. A process of reaching and understanding and forgetting. Confrontation with an impossible legacy. HAUNTS is humiliating.

Developed through the support of the Jerome Foundation Travel & Research Grant, Ars Nova Residency 2009, and the San Francisco Performance Art Institute artist in residency program.
