Dubbed “a demigod of the demimonde” by Time Out New York, legendary performance artist and chanteuse Joey Arias appears in his first residency at Joe’s Pub over a series of three Sundays this winter.  Harking back to the days of Bar d’O (the notorious West Village boîte where Arias reigned for nearly a decade), each week sees the Arias With A Twist star exploring a range of musical selections from Billie Holiday and popular standards to 70′s rock anthems and Klaus Nomi.  The residency is a warm up to Arias’ west coast tour, anchored by a headlining concert at the historic Castro Theater in San Francisco on Valentine’s Day.

The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac

Monday, November 5, 2012
7:00 pm
Joe’s Pub
425 Lafayette St.
New York, NY
Tickets: $20
Tickets

Taylor Mac’s 1830s concert on Monday, Nov 5th has been changed (due to Sandy) to an updated version of his solo, “The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac”, which will incorporate election eve mayhem, the Hurricane, new material, the passing of a kidney stone, and a deconstruction of the adage, “The Show Must Go On”.

This is what those people who say those things have said about “Be(A)st”:

“An intellectually arduous and beautifully realized piece about the dangers of homogeneity, and what happens to the soul when it forgoes the richness of the imagination.” — Hilton Als, The New Yorker

“You marvel at how assured and in control this brash, genial performer is.” — The New York Times

5 stars — “ Quite the most distinctive and brilliant performer I’ve witnessed in ages.” — The Scotsman

“An unflinching witness to a host of societies ills…linked together by a gentle impassioned humanity and a wry humor that can have you helpless with laughter, then overcome by an urge to weep — and ultimately left thinking and wanting to make life better.” — The Herald

“A Pierrot figure for the modern age.” — The (UK) Daily Telegraph
