“21st Century cabaret stars like no other.
Talented to within an inch of their lives, you’ll fall in love”
- Time Out London

BOURGEOIS AND MAURICE – Part-cabaret, part-theatre, part-catwalk freakshow – are a musical cabaret duo with style as sharp as their wit. Their original songs blend unashamedly catchy pop hooks with bitingly satirical lyrics, taking on a vast range of important human issues, from reptilian conspiracy theories to the eroticization of the finance sector. As one of London’s leading cabaret acts they have performed in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House, Southbank Centre, Wales Millennium Centre and the Royal Academy of Arts. They have enjoyed sell-out shows at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and also toured the music festival circuit with appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude, Bestival, Electric Picnic and Lovebox, among others.

Always wearing custom-made clothing from some of London’s most exciting new designers, the duo have also contributed a double spread of sartorial wisdom to Time Out London’s 2009 Fashion Week special, edited by Gareth Pugh, and won London’s Alternative Eurovision in 2010 with their fashion-forward electro pop nightmare ‘Out Outfit You’.

Feb 18 – May 20, 2012
Opening Reception Feb 18
6:00 – 9:00 pm
25 Knickerbocker Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11237

Luhring Augustine’s inaugurates their new Bushwick space with The Illusion of Democracy, a solo exhibition of the American film and video artist Charles Atlas.

Charlies is a familiar face at PUSSY FAGGOT! as he has twice presented his video work at the event and is a regular attendee. More broadly, Atlas is a pioneering figure in film and video; for over four decades he has stretched the limits of his medium, forging new territory in a far-reaching range of genres, stylistic approaches, and techniques. Throughout his production, Atlas has consistently been deeply involved in fostering collaborative relationships, working intimately with such significant artists and performers as Leigh Bowery, Michael Clark, Douglas Dunn, Marina Abramovic, Yvonne Rainer, Mika Tajima and the New Humans, Antony and the Johnsons, and most notably Merce Cunningham, with whom he worked closely for a decade from the early 1970s through 1983.

The Illusion of Democracy will include two video installations never before seen in New York, Painting by Numbers, 2008 and Plato’s Alley, 2009. Atlas will also exhibit a new large-scale video work made specifically for this exhibition.

Charles Atlas was born in St. Louis, MO in 1949; he has lived and worked in New York City since the early 1970s. His work has been exhibited domestically and internationally in such institutions as Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. In Summer 2011, the New Museum, New York held a solo exhibition of Atlas’ film, Joints Array. In March 2012, Atlas will have a solo exhibition at the De Hallen, Haarlem and will be included in the 2012 Whitney Biennial. In late 2012, Regency Arts Press Ltd. will publish the first major publication of Atlas’ work.

Inspired by the relationship between quantum physics and mythology, this theatrical exploration uses as it’s title and jumping off point a Carl Sagan quote. The vastness of the universe is expostulated in an effort to correct the illusion that there is illusion. The Gods of “The Odyssey” and their acolytes make small steps toward the evolution of ideas into a self-sustaining transformation from romance to reason and the super-nuclear force that transformation releases into the universe, joined by later re-examinations of those characters; this piece will invade the archetypes of human ancestry in order to re-align it with the impetus for human imagination.

Featuring music by Gerald Busby as well as Inbred Hybrid Collective

Special Guest Stars: Penny Arcade and Judith Malina

About Inbred Hybrid Collective:

Canadian-born inter-disciplinary/ multi-media artist was born on January 22nd, 1980, Grande Prairie, Alberta. Since 2005 Inbred Hybrid Collective has been living and working in New York, developing diverse events and exhibitions of increasingly significant scale.

Inbred Hybrid Collective presents a fractured vision of popular culture through a lens of utopian idealism, in painting, installation, music, writing, and performance. Inbred Hybrid Collective’s unflinching view of mundane human existence provides a stark contrast with an exaggerated ornamental approach to materiality. Inbred Hybrid Collective’s paintings suggest a wildly diverse universe of references, incorporating aspects of narrative structures of Renaissance paintings and the decadent decorative styleof the Vienna Secession, among others. In addition Inbred Hybrid Collective creates often invasive and occasionally unsanctioned installations for display in public spheres. These sculptures use mundane objects such as wire hangers and tape to transform spaces and materials into organic, inclusive works of art.

Inbred Hybrid Collective’s work has been shown at venues as diverse as New York’s Lincoln Center, Metro Pictures, the Ontario Crafts Council, The Queens Museum of Art, The Staten Island Museum, the Liverpool Independents Biennale, and The LGBT Centers of both New York and San Francisco. In 2009, Inbred Hybrid Collective made history as the first performance artist at the famous “Armory Show,” in New York. Book Club Burlesque, a series of multi-media extravaganzas inspired by specific books, has been regularly produced by Inbred Hybrid Collective since 2005, and has garnered the attention of The New Yorker, New York Magazine, The Village Voice, and New York Press, among others.

Inbred Hybrid Collective made a highly regarded debut as a curator during the 2010 London Biennale.

Inbred Hybrid Collective’s mandate is to stimulate a consciousness of the external factors affecting our human existence, through the creation of provocative, experientially immersive work. inbredhybridcollective.tumblr. com

About Penny Arcade:

A runaway at thirteen, a reform-school graduate at sixteen, a performer in the legendary Play-House of the Ridiculous at eighteen, and an Andy Warhol Factory Superstar at 19, Penny Arcade emerged as a primal force on the New York art scene in the 1990’s . An originator of performance art, Arcade’s brand of merging high content, street-smart, punk-rock showmanship and visionary theatre has won over audiences internationally and has few equals.

The author of ten evening length performance plays including the international mainstream hit Bitch!Dyke!Faghag!Whore! her work centers on the outsider and other in society. A political humanist and cultural critic, her work has tackled class, racism, homophobia, and mysogony. She is a writer of poetry, spoken word and essays. She is an interviewer par excellence in her long running video series with collaborator Steve Zehentner The LES Biography Project “Stemming The Tide of Cultural Amnesia.” Wednesdays 11pm ch 34 Time/Warner www.pennyarcade.tv

Bad Reputation , a hard cover book on Arcade’s work was published in 2011 by Semiotexte/MIT Press

Other recent premieres include STRING QUARTET NO. 3 by the Stanford Quartet, and music for Kyle Kupres’ theatrical chamber opera THE OLD QUEEN AND THE SEA, which premiered July 21, 2011 at Splatterpool Artspace. Gerald has just completed and recorded MOTHS AT MY WINDOW, 15 haiku by Ellen Peckham, with mezzo-soprano Rose Sullivan, vibraphonist Andrew Bowman, and marimbist Diana Herold; and six other songs for mezzo-soprano and piano, Martin Hennessy, pianist. A CD of these songs will be included in Ellen Peckham’s book CONTINUUM, a collection of her poetry and etchings published by Atelier Æ, NY March 2012.

Gerald appeared as the Reverend David Ruteledge in Robert Altman’s film, A WEDDING, and as himself in Abel Ferrara’s documentary about the Chelsea Hotel, CHELSEA ON THE ROCKS. A documentary film of Gerald’s life is in production.

Thursday nights have become a lot brighter since Paisley Dalton started this weekly party at Eastern Bloc. Paisley werques the crowd from the DJ booth spinning everything from Lou Rawls to Britney Spears with a little Liza Minnelli thrown in for good measure. Fierce new queen on the scene, Leo Gugu cavorts through the bar and dances on the stripper bowl, snapping a large paper fan in time with the music. Ever-explosive blonde A-bomb Gerry Visco blindingly documents the night, adding to an appealing experience sensory overload. To celebrate Fashion Week, this week’s guest host is Patrick McDonald.

Better known as “The Dandy” to fashionistas everywhere, Patrick McDonald has been at the top of the New York fashion scene since his arrival in the late 1970s. Born in Germany to American parents, McDonald spent his early years in California before starting his career as a model. McDonald’s love of high fashion led him to pursue a career in the industry, holding positions as an assistant buyer at Barney’s and couture director at Fabrice. A style icon known for his unique look, McDonald has appeared in publications that include PAPER, Detour, New York, Numero, SoHo Style, Surface, The New York Times Lifestyle section,Sportswear International and Russian Vogue. McDonald has been voted one of Gotham Magazine’s 100 Best Dressed New Yorkers. You can catch more looks from The Dandy at the Dorian Grey Gallery Exhibition The Dandy’s New York, running February 7-March 4.
